Deranged: The Shocking True Story of America’s Most Fiendish Killer! by Harold Schechter

Info

Albert Fish was a once in a lifetime maniac. He was pure evil behind a droopy mustache and the inspiration for a lot of urban legends about the neighborhood creep that kills kids. He went by many names: the Gray Man, the Werewolf of Wysteria, the Brooklyn Vampire, the Moon Maniac, and The Boogey Man. Though, primarily known for murdering and eating the corpse of Grace Budd, a young girl that he kidnapped right out from under her parents, Fish was prolific child rapist and claims to have raped over 100 kids, at least one in every state. No one knows if this is true or not but given the scope of the horror he caused, it’s not out of the question.

By the time of his arrest in 1928, Fish was a suspect named in five murders but confessed to only three and numerous other stabbings.

Fish was the product of vicious physical and sexual abuse during his childhood which wired his brain for pain and sex, both sadism and masochism. He was a psychotic, obsessed with every single sexual perversion that a human being can imagine, up to and including the brown and the yellow. Fish claimed to be following the instruction of John The Apostle when he engaged in a life-long habit of self-harm. X-rays of his torso revealed his abdomen to be full of needles. His cruelty to himself was legendary as was his cruelty to others. On top of murder and mayhem, Fish engaged in taunts with the police and families of his victims, including a letter written to the family of Grace Budd, describing in detail what he had done to her.
