The Most Haunted House in England: Ten Years’ Investigation of Borley Rectory by Harry Price
England is home turf for some of our Last Podcast haunted house favorites. We have The Enfield Poltergeist, and The Black Monk of Pontefract, for starters. And just like those, the haunting known as The Borley Rectory, the allegedly “Most Haunted House in England” is full of the same characteristically British investigations and characters.
Borley Rectory, a home for the clerics of the local church parish, was built on the remains of as many as three other buildings and quickly gained a reputation for being a spooky spot in Essex thanks to sounds reported throughout the house by its various occupants. It started with the sounds of footsteps all over the house and grew to sightings of a nun on the premises with a tragic and woefully unsubstantiated story to back her up and a spectral carriage driven by a pair of headless horsemen. The legend of Borley Rectory was kicked into high gear around the turn of twentieth century with the introduction of Harry Price, from the Society for Psychical Research.
Paranormal activity reported before and after the investigation by Price is spartan, to say the least, but the evidence reported by Price was wild and dramatic, with violent poltergeist activity and spirits with intelligence, that you could speak with. Unfortunately, for Price, most of his evidence was debunked in the years that followed or as closely to their reportage as: immediately, leading most people to believe that Price was responsible for propagating a hoax.
