Further Reading For Fairies
The Power Of Magic: Secrets And Mysteries Ancient And Modern by Derek Parker, Julia Parker
Info
According to legend and world folklore, fairies are magical beings or spirits representing an entire spectrum of behavior and magic. Fairies are most often depicted as tiny winged humans but depending on where you are in the world they can be as tall and as proportioned as any old human. The one consistent quality that they bring with them is magic.
For some cultures, they’re thought to be a cultural memory of a pre-historic race, beings that existed and thrived on Earth until driven to extinction or drive undergound. For others, they’re spirits of the dead, demoted angels, demonic spirits. Still, for many cultures, they’re the memory of their previous cultural religious forces, gods and godesses that were worshipped in their lands until the arrival of conquering Christianity. They’re typically divided into classes, seelie and unseelie. The former implies a benevolent, helpful being that, at its worst, is entirely ambivalent about humans, while the latter is a much more malevolent creature. Unseelie spirits can be as mild as obnoxious tricksters and as vile as violent monsters out to destroy all human life.
