The Corpse Garden: The Crimes of Fred and Rose West by Colin Wilson

Info

Redneck serial murderers (Henry Lee Lucas/Willie Pickton) are a real treat. They combine the abject horror of the ritual and process of a person who takes great (sexual) pleasure in stalking and killing another human being with the total social cluelesness of an individual that has no idea that raping your immediate family members is generally frowned upon by polite society. Fred and Rose West are a particularly nasty twist on the formula in that neither of them seemed to give much thought to their outcomes. Rape, murder, and abuse came naturally to them, as though they were raised around it.

Between 1967 and 1987, Fred and Rose committed 12 rapes and murders, mostly of women that had taken to living in their squalid manor while Fred pimped Rose out to locals. They were also extremely abusive to their massive brood of filthy offspring, some of whom ended up murdered and buried in the yard behind West’s home. In spite of being truly awful people, the West’s actually had a deep and abiding love for one another. This would be tested when they were finally arrested amid a whole menu of horror and tragedy. We would find out that Rose was an even bigger psychopath than Fred when she turned him out to authorities and Fred went to his grave, leaving behind a suicide note about how much he loved Rose. Rose, meanwhile, had completely written him off and continues to do her time. She will die in prison.
