The Death of Innocence : The Untold Story of JonBenet’s Murder and How Its Exploitation Compromised the Pursuit of Truth by John and Pat Ramsey

Info

I remember when the news of this murder broke. What a bummer. Six year old JonBenet Ramsey was found murdered in her home on Christmas day in 1996. First reported missing, her body was later found in the basement of the family’s home, dead by blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation. Before her body was found, her family found a ransom note presumably left by the kidnappers/killers.

On the surface, so much of this story seemed so straight forward. Of course, the family was the principle suspects in the murder, but as the days went on and the investigation floundered, the true dimension of the JonBenet murder became weirder and weirder. Every magazine in America was plastered with the face of a girl that couldn’t possibly be 6. She was a contestant in junior beauty pageants, where the stakes were so high that all contestants were dressed and made up like little adults. The competition was incredibly fierce. The ransom note was suspiciously long, as well. Most notes are short and to the point. This one was three rambling pages and the handwriting was strikingly similar to that of JonBenet’s mother. But investigators could find no concrete links. There was no evidence to tie the members of the Ramsey house directly to the murder in spite of all the circumstance pointing to one of the family members being the killer. There was no obvious motive, either. Nothing ever jumped out. But the trail was littered with strangeness.

To this day, the murder remains unsolved.
