DIE FOR ME: The Terrifying True Story of the Charles Ng & Leonard Lake Torture Murders by Don Lasseter

Info

This pair of monsters were a nasty serial killin’ pair similar to Kennifer Bianchi and his cousin Angelo, The Hillside Stranglers. In the mid-1980’s, the pair kidnapped, raped and tortured and ultimately murdered as many as 25 women in a self-made wilderness survival bunker in hills of the Sierra Nevada, near Donner Party territory.

Lake was a gigantic nerd, obsessed with the John Fowles novel, The Collector, wherein a man kidnaps and keeps women for his amusement. He saw himself as a truly free man, an anarchist that made his own way in the world. Like most of these guys, including Ted Kaczynski, he was utterly insufferable and probably a real chose to be around. Charles Ng, a fellow marine, met Lake through a war gaming magazine ad after being dishonorably discharged from the Marine Corps for theft and desertion. He was mostly along for the ride. Ng was a pretty weird dude, anyway, and nobody he knew seemed to appreciate the things that he brought to their friendship. Rumors persist that he was pretty good at karate kicks.

The primary focus of their crimes was procuring women to be kept in their survivalist dungeon but many of their victims were people who seemed to either get in their way or were in the wrong place at the wrong time since neither Lake nor Ng were particularly good at committing crimes. Upon arrest, Lake managed to commit suicide by eating some of the many cyanide pills he had sewn into his clothing for just such an occasion, leaving Ng to take the fall for the crimes.
