The murder of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman was a key defining moment in the 1990’s. OJ Simpson, one of the greatest running backs in the history of American football stood accused of the murders and in spite of a mountain of evidence against him he still managed to wiggle out of the consequences, leaving the crime officially unsolved (even though we all know that OJ did it).
OJ’s trial dragged on and on and on. It cost more than any case in American history and was the test case for the success of Court TV. Everything about the trial was publicized. Police chased OJ’s bronco up and down the LA freeway in the slowest, most anti-climactic car chase in history. Every single aspect of the case was presented to the public in tabloid news. Careers were made and broken over it. Unless you were there, it’s hard to describe just how strange this case was and how amazing it was that OJ got away with it.
Though, he escaped justice for the murders, the victims’ families were awarded nearly $35m in a wrongful death civil suit that more or less ruined OJ’s fortune. In the meantime, he published his account of the crime, If I Did It, in which OJ attempts to clear his name by inexplicably explaining in great detail how he would have committed the murder had he, ya know, did it.
