Roswell gets all the attention thanks to The X-Files, but a much more significant UFO encounter took place in a heavily forested region of The UK in late December of 1980. Known as The Rendlesham Forest Incident, a handful of American Air Force personnel stationed at RAF Woodbridge had a close encounter with an unidentified flying object. RAF Woodbridge is a British Royal Air Force base which was also being used by American military to host the 78th & 79th Tactical Fighter Squadron and the 81st Fighter Wing.

In the early hours of December 26th, 1980, an RAF Woodbridge security patrol witnessed lights in the sky descending on the nearby forest of Rendlesham in the Suffolk region of England, a coastal area to the northeast of London. Servicemen first thought that the lights may be a downed aircraft but when they arrived they found a craft landed in the forest that they could not identify. The servicemen described a small triangular craft which glowed and had flashing colored lights. When they approached, the craft moved away from them, weaving through the trees. Two days later, further Air Force investigations recorded a similar encounter by a similar craft.

In the days since the encounter, skeptics, the Department of Defense, and the British military have been quick to shred the claims of UFO activity. Debunkers note the nearby lighthouse as all the proof that they need to prove that the encounter was not what the USAF personnel thought it was. At it’s worst, British SAS personnel claim to have perpetrated it as some sort of convoluted revenge plot for capturing SAS infiltrators and roughing them up before setting them free.
