Info

I grew up in the heat of Satanic Ritual Abuse. It’s hard to imagine people being that afraid of satanic cults allegedly hiding in every community around the United States but I was a ratty teenager in a denim jacket covered in heavy metal patches and some of my friends’ parents were actually concerned that I was one of these satanists, doing a terrible job of hiding, and their children were literally at risk of either being sacrificed to the devil just by hanging out with me. Or worse.

Satanic Ritual Abuse is the subject of a panic that gripped the United States in the 80’s, taking on a million forms but at the heart of so-called conspiracy was the belief that satanic cults were everywhere. They were your neighbors, your friends, potentially anyone around you at any given time and these people kidnapped children or bred them on their own to be ritually abused sexually and physically. Some of them were raised just to be murdered. People came out of the woodwork at this time claiming that they had been victims of awful, awful crimes by organized cult networks. Sometimes the cults were a loose collection of ordinary people devoted to the devil and sometimes they were a part of a vast government conspiracy.

It sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? But believe it or not, claims of SRA ruined lives and communities. People went to trial over these allegations. Some of them ended up in jail. It was a real nightmare that never produced so much as a shred of evidence that conclusively proved even the slightest hint of a satanic conspiracy.
